Unique Ledges for Artwork and Books

Ledge is the word of the week.

One narrow. One wide.

And this post shares how these come together to solve ORC Week 3’s decorating dilemma.

Unique Ledges for Artwork and Books

One Room Challenge Week 3

The Wide Ledge

Some people call this an overhead ledge. Or even a floating overhead ledge.

Whatever you like to call it, it’s a great space for books and achievements that need to be unpacked and enjoyed, but not necessarily used as styling props.

How to Make the Wide Ledge

The ledge board is cut from 1/2 inch MDF and attached to the wall using plain ole $1.79 wall brackets on the top of the MDF instead of the underneath. Quarter-round molding is attached underneath to provide a finished look to this hide-away wide ledge.

The ledge can’t be seen when looking into the office, but provides good storage and visual interest to visitors inside the work space. There are special treasures piled on that ledge that I would never give away, but really don’t want on display, either. And now, I’m so glad to have the best of both worlds.

The Narrow Ledge

As for the narrow ledge. Funny story.

Unique ledges can come in all shapes and sizes | #uniqueledges #oneroomchallenge #ORC #betterhomesandgardens #bhgorc | www.thechelseaproject.com

A few weeks ago, a top designer had put a buzz in my ear about using fabric on the walls. Yes, fabric on the walls is coming back into home decor style. Then that idea combined with the buzz in my other ear about needing a little something to make the walls unique and interesting.

Check out the blog post to see what this narrow ledge used to be | #uniqueledges #oneroomchallenge #ORC #betterhomesandgardens #bhgorc | www.thechelseaproject.com

And the result?

A set of pristine, vintage, fabric-covered window valances-turned-narrow ledges.

OK, I’m trying to provide a peek without giving away the reveal, so please bear with me. In a small room, y’all know how this is super hard. LOL…

These valances will partially hide behind furniture so there is a touch of fabric on the walls, but not a full-on commitment. It provides a little pattern, a little color, a little depth, and a little interest. But most importantly, it provides……a perfect little ledge.

Not all valances would work for this ledge hack, but certainly there is nothing wrong with checking out well-tailored valances anytime you find them.

Cuz ya just never know…..

And that’s all there is for this week. Two unique ledges to hold all your treasures.

Can’t wait to show you the full effect in the reveal, but for now….back to the sewing machine for next week’s DIY.

I do hope you will tune-in to watch the projects progress and the rooms unfold. It’s always a joy to have you stop by.

I love the overhead shelving and can’t wait to see the fabric ones in all their glory!

I’ve always loved the way over-head ledges look – especially when they’re full of books and artwork.
