Sunflowers and Frugal Mommas

Sunflowers in September | The Chelsea Project |

Hello Friends,

Earlier in the week, there was a discussion over on Instagram about how long sunflowers should be used in fall decor.  What do you think?  Do you have a cut-off date or do you think they can be used all the way through Thanksgiving?

I will tell you that, for me, sunflowers are easier to manage than mums because the blooms do not have to be nurtured into bloom.

I ask because I’m planning another fall campaign for a wreath company and may include sunflowers in the post.  But before I do, I’d love to know what you prefer.  Sunflowers or mums in October?

I actually love sunflowers and prefer them to Mums, but having said that, here where we live in SW France, sunflowers are grown for their oil, we are surrounded by fields and fields of them and most now are dry and I n the process of being harvested. but occasionally in the fields we will find the tiny ones that missed the blades of the harvester, we always collect these and bring them home to put in a vase, a perfect reminder of summer.

I’ve never had any luck with mums. I being them home and they’re beautiful but they never bloom for me again. I’ve grown sunflowers a few times but for me I think you can use whatever flower you want in a wreath if the color fits the season. Heck, people are making blue pumpkins now so I you can do/use anything you want that’s beautiful to you

Sunflowers make me smile. Mums don’t. Go with sunflowers as long as you can!
